ART + NATURE = Generating Awareness, Powering the Arts, Sourcing Inspiration
MAY 2008
“When you arrive at a fork in the road, take it.”
Yogi Berra
Nature Connection
April and May are the transition months. Signs of spring are everywhere; trees are beginning to bud and tulips and daffodils are emerging.
I have my own signs of spring; they crawl out from the woods on the first warm, rainy night, look like sticks on the road and are hard to recognize for what they are. Many hundreds are squashed by cars. They don't scamper across the road, they move very slowly, (and this is their downfall) they often stop for awile, as if they are enjoying the cool moisture of the pavement before resuming their quest. It is their quest, because they are crossing the road to get to that vernal pool or pond to mate, to carry on their species.
Some say the spotted salamanders are a gauge of the health of a forest. Every spring, for the last few years, I've had my eye out for them and I try and try to rescue a few of them from the dreaded cars.
So what's the 'art + nature' connection here? Well, usually I have some scrap of cardboard or something I can coax them onto to lift them to the other side of the road. They came early this year (there was still quite a bit of snow on the ground), and I was unprepared, so I used what I had available: a Waterfall Arts brochure. I'm proud to say, Waterfall Arts was directly involved in saving a half-dozen or so spotted salamanders from certain death. Not a bad night's work.
